LIGO stands for Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. It is a scientific experiment designed to detect and measure gravitational waves, which are ripples in the fabric of space-time caused by violent events in the universe, such as the collision of two black holes. The LIGO detectors use laser interferometry to measure the minuscule distortions caused by passing gravitational waves. The LIGO project is a collaboration between scientists from around the world, and has already made several groundbreaking discoveries since the first detection of gravitational waves in 2015. A third detector is being built in India as part of the LIGO-India collaboration, which will improve the accuracy of gravitational wave detection and help us to better understand the workings of the universe.
